Temperature Conversions

The easiest way to convert temperatures from Fahrenheit to Celsius or from Celsius to Fahrenheit is to use your phone or Google.

However, it is also good to be able to convert these temperatures in your head or on paper, in case you need a quick estimate, or just so you understand how they work and practice math.

To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, the equation is:
(# °C + 32) × 9/5 = °F      (# is the number you are converting)

If you are using a calculator or you are better at decimals, 9/5ths is 1.8

To convert Fahrenheit to Celsius, the equation is:
(# °F − 32) × 5/9 = °C    (# is the number you are converting)

If you are using a calculator or you are better at decimals, 5/9ths is .5556

For your assessment, you should recognize which equations do what and be able to estimate a conversion. Questions are multiple-choice, and the possible answers will not be close together. If you are close, you will know the correct answer.

To practice, try converting different temperatures on paper and checking your answer on Google here. You can type into either temperature box and get a conversion on the other side. It is OK if your decimal is not exact. You should be able to get approximate values.
