Welcome to Math with Mr. J!

In this video, I'm going to cover how to convert degrees Celsius to degrees Fahrenheit, and we have two examples that we're going to go through together in order to get this down.

Now, the formula that we're going to use is at the top of the screen, so we're going to take the degrees Celsius that we're given, multiply it by 1 and 8 tenths, and then add 32. I also have an estimation formula that I'll go through, and the estimation formula can be used to find an approximate or close conversion using mental math.

So let's jump into number one, where we have 14 degrees Celsius. We will rewrite our formula first, so we have degrees Celsius times 1 and 8 tenths plus 32. So we need to plug in what we're given, and we're given 14 degrees Celsius that's what we're converting. Bring everything else down here, and now we're ready to solve.

So 14 times 1 and 8 tenths is going to give us 25 and 2 tenths. So you can either do that by hand or punch that into a calculator. Either way, 25 and 2 tenths, then we add 32, so 25 and 2 tenths plus 32 is going to give us an answer of 57 and 2 tenths degrees Fahrenheit. So 14 degrees Celsius equals 57 and 2 tenths degrees Fahrenheit.

Now, as far as estimation, we can use degrees Celsius times two plus thirty. I rounded the numbers in the original formula to simpler numbers to work with as far as mental math and coming up with an approximate or close conversion. So for example number one, we can do 14 degrees Celsius times 2, which is 28, plus 30 is 58. So this formula would give us an estimation of 58 degrees Fahrenheit, which you can see is pretty close to the actual conversion. So that would give us a good estimate there.

On to number two, where we have 29 degrees Celsius. So let's write out our formula: degrees Celsius times 1 and 8 tenths plus 32. So we plug in what we're given and what we want to convert, which is 29 degrees Celsius, times 1 and 8 tenths plus 32. So 29 times 1 and 8 tenths is going to give us an answer of 52 and 2 tenths, plus 32, and our conversion is going to be 84 and 2 tenths degrees Fahrenheit. So 29 degrees Celsius equals 84 and 2 tenths degrees Fahrenheit.

Now, as far as the estimation for number two, we are going to use the formula right here: degrees Celsius times two plus 30. So 29 times two is 58, plus 30 gives us an estimate of 88 degrees Fahrenheit. So the estimation formula gave us an approximate or close answer to the exact conversion, but we were able to compute that using mental math.

So there you have it, there's how you convert Celsius to Fahrenheit. I hope that helped! Thanks so much for watching, until next time.
